In brief

Heliskiing without the jet lag

Heliskiing – also written heli-skiing, or called helicopter skiing – means a helicopter takes you to a summit and a mountain guide leads you down through untracked snow. Heli Guides flies you in its own helicopters to altitudes of up to 4,100 metres – in Cervinia, Courmayeur, Gressoney, Zermatt and nine more areas of the Alps. You ski in groups of no more than four guests, always with a mountain guide.

A first heliski day with one flight costs from €415 per person, three days with hotel and guide from €2,100, a week from €3,450. The season runs from December to May.

Requirements

How well do I need to ski?

You should ski confidently on piste and have some experience off piste. You don’t need to be a pro: wide, forgiving skis and gentle to moderately steep terrain make heliskiing possible for many good skiers and snowboarders.

If you are unsure, start with the “My First Heliski Day” or a freeride day: the guide sees how you ski and advises you.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

How much does heliskiing in the Alps cost?

With Heli Guides a heliski day costs from €415 per person: that is the “My First Heliski Day” in Cervinia, with one flight and a mountain guide. A day with two flights costs from €595, three days with hotel and guide from €2,100, a week from €3,450. VIP programmes in Zermatt start at €8,650.

How well do I need to ski or snowboard?

You should ski confidently on piste and have some experience off piste. You don’t need to be a pro. For first-timers there is the “My First Heliski Day”; if you are unsure, book a freeride day with a guide first.

Where is heliskiing allowed in the Alps?

In Italy and Switzerland heliskiing is allowed in designated areas. In France it is banned, and in Austria it is only possible at Lech am Arlberg. Heli Guides flies in ten Italian areas as well as in Zermatt and St. Moritz. For Chamonix the helicopter takes off in Courmayeur.

Is there heliskiing in Austria?

In Austria heliskiing is only possible at Lech am Arlberg. Heli Guides does not currently fly there; its programmes take place in Italy and Switzerland.

When is the best time for heliskiing in the Alps?

The season runs from December to May, in some areas until April. Around Mont Blanc you usually find powder from early January to early April, followed by spring snow.

What happens in bad weather?

If the guaranteed flights cannot be flown because of wind, weather or avalanche risk, you receive the value of the unflown flights as a voucher or, on request, a refund (terms and conditions, section 13). On those days your guide takes you freeriding in the ski areas.

What is included in the price?

On day programmes the mountain guide, the helicopter flights listed and the safety equipment are included. On multi-day programmes the hotel and the listed vertical metres or flights are added. Additional helicopter flights, equipment hire, drinks and lunch are not included; on day programmes neither are the ski pass and transfers.

Can I join alone or with one other person?

Yes. You can join an open group alone or with one other person; the dates are fixed. A group has no more than four guests per mountain guide.

How do I get to the heliski areas?

By car, or by flying to Turin, Milan Malpensa or Geneva; for St. Moritz also Zurich. Flights within Europe are short and there is no jet lag.

How do I book and pay?

You send an enquiry and usually receive a quote within 1–2 days. Once you return the booking form and pay the 35% deposit, the trip is confirmed; the balance is due 45 days before the trip. You can pay by credit card.

Can I go heliskiing on a snowboard?

Yes. Heli Guides takes both skiers and snowboarders, and the requirements are the same.

Ready for your first flight?
